Don't Apply for Jobs – Let Companies Call You: My Easy Tips

Hey VAP Talks crew! What's up? I'm a DevOps engineer working since 2022 at one of the biggest IT firms in Pune. I make CI/CD pipelines with Jenkins, use Docker and Kubernetes for apps, write scripts in Bash and Python, and manage AWS like EC2 and S3. I also code in Java and C, fix problems late at night with chai, and learn from mistakes. Job hunting can feel tiring if you keep applying everywhere. But what if companies call you instead? I learned this trick after wasting time on applications. Now, I get calls without applying much. Today, I'll share simple tips on how to get calls from companies. Focus on job sites like LinkedIn and Naukri, with more on Naukri since it helped me a lot. We'll talk about profile setup, SEO for skills, Naukri's system, daily updates, and paid services. This works for all engineers, not just DevOps. Let's make your phone ring with job offers – ready?

Why Let Companies Call You?

Applying to jobs takes time and often gets no reply. This is because now, for one job role, companies get multiple entries. It's a big task to find the best fit from all that data. Even with ATS (Applicant Tracking System), people have learned how to beat it. ATS is just a machine that checks keywords, so folks add keywords in white text or use tools for ATS-friendly resumes. AI can't replace humans; it's just a tool. So companies still need people to pick the right candidate. They first look for references because those are already checked by others. If no references, they hunt for resources and reach out directly to good matches. As per general research, around 70-80% of job hiring happens without a public job posting. So there's no point in applying; if you fix your profile right, recruiters find you. I went from zero calls to regular ones by tweaking my Naukri profile. It's like fishing, put good bait, and fish come to you. Save time and get better fits.

Keep Your Job Profiles Strong

Start with good profiles on LinkedIn and Naukri. These are like your online resume. Update them often to show you're active.

LinkedIn

  • Add all your skills, achievements, and work stories.
  • Engage with posts and build a network.
  • For me, listing DevOps skills like Linux, SQL, PL/SQL, Python, and scripting has led to recruiter messages.

Naukri

  • Fill your profile 100% – photo, skills, work history, education.
  • Highlight strong keywords like “DevOps Engineer Pune,” “AWS Expert,” “Kubernetes Specialist.”
  • Show projects that prove your skills. For example: Python Electricity Bill Generator – a simple tool to calculate bills, DevOps E-Commerce Website – containerized the app, deployed with Kubernetes, set up AWS via Terraform, and CI/CD with Jenkins, Shell Scripting Projects – log checkers, backup scripts, etc.

This not only gets attention but also builds trust with recruiters.

Use SEO on Your Skills

SEO simply means making your profile easier to find in searches. Since I had prior SEO experience, I applied the same concept to my Naukri profile. The idea is to include the keywords recruiters are most likely to search for.

Instead of just listing “Software Engineer,” I added specific, targeted terms like

  • DevOps Engineer Pune
  • Jenkins Expert
  • Kubernetes Specialist
  • Shell Scripting
  • PL/SQL Developer
  • Python Scripting Pro

The result was powerful: my profile ranking jumped from page 5 to the first page in recruiter searches. Because of that, my visibility increased, and recruiter calls went up from just 1 per week to 4–5.

Think of it like Google SEO but for jobs. Place keywords naturally in your headline, summary, and skills section. Don’t overload your profile with too many, as it can look fake. Keep it simple, relevant, and natural.

How Naukri’s Algorithm Works

Naukri has a smart system that decides which profiles recruiters see first. From my own experience, it took me 2–3 months to figure out how the algorithm really works, and here’s what I learned:

  • Profile completeness: A 100% filled profile always ranks better.
  • Fresh updates: Recently updated profiles show up higher.
  • Right keywords: Matching the exact job skills recruiters search for is key.
  • Location, skills & experience: The closer you fit, the better your chances.
  • Activity level: Logging in regularly and applying to jobs keeps your profile active. But don’t apply to too many jobs, it won’t increase calls. Just applying to one job is enough to tweak the algorithm and show your profile as active.

The real trick? Update your profile daily. Even small tweaks like adding a skill, refreshing your summary, or reordering keywords push your profile higher. Naukri favors active users and treats them as serious candidates. Once I started doing this, my visibility shot up, and recruiters began calling more frequently. It’s almost like the system rewards freshness.

Try Naukri Paid Services

Naukri has paid options to boost visibility. The top ones are Resume Display and Featured Profile. Resume Display puts your profile at the top of searches for 1-3 months. Featured Profile highlights you in recruiters' inboxes. In the last month of my notice period, I used it cost around 1000 rupees, but calls doubled.

But remember, paid services don't promise calls. They just show your profile more. If your profile lacks good skills or experience, no calls come. You need strong content first. I got value because my DevOps wins matched jobs. It's like ads, good product sells, bad one doesn't.

Extra Simple Tips

These work for anyone, with my DevOps flavor:

  • Update daily to stay on top.
  • Add real projects to stand out, like my e-commerce Kubernetes setup.
  • Log in often to look active.
  • Don't apply too much; let calls come.

Mistakes I made: I took the paid service toward the end, but honestly, I should have tried it earlier to boost my calls. Still, here’s the key point you need to understand: paid options only work if your profile is already strong. So first, focus on building a solid profile with the right skills, keywords, and projects; only then think about investing in paid services.

From my experience with Naukri’s algorithm, daily updates and small tweaks are the real game-changers. In the beginning, I ignored this and barely got calls. But once I started adding relevant skills and real projects, my profile matched recruiter needs much better — and that’s when the calls really started increasing.
